Exotic Fishes and Freshwater Fish Diversity

چکیده
Received on 27 July 2000 Accepted on 27 September 2000 Abstract The freshwater aquatic biodiversity is depleting alarmingly due to the introduction of exotic species and other anthropogenic activities. The indiscriminate transfer of exotic fishes has brought about a wide array of problems including extirpation of indigenous species. The exotics compete with the indigenous species for food, habitat and may even prey upon them, introduce new parasites and diseases, result in the production of hybirds and cause genetic ‘erosion’ of indigenous species and degradation of the physico-chemical nature of aquatic ecosystems. The potential risks not only affect the biodiversity, but also the socio-economic aspects of the human community that depend on aquatic ecosystems for their sustenance. The paper reviews the impact of exotic fishes on aquatic biodiversity in India and the measures to check this.

Parasites of Native and Exotic Freshwater Fishes in the South West of Western Australia
Fewer than 200 fish species are found in freshwater habitats in Australia, of which 144 are confined exclusively to freshwater. At least 22 species of exotic freshwater fish have been introduced into Australia, and 19 of these have established selfsustaining populations. However, the parasite fauna of both native and exotic freshwater fishes in Australia is poorly known. This is particularly th...
